Elementary Curriculum Overview: Religion: We use the “Voyages” curriculum, published by Concordia Publishing House in PK-gr. 6. Math: “Saxon Math” is used in K-6. Math is taught at the same time in all classes to allow for adjustment in teaching/learning levels as needed. English: The “Shurley” English program is used in grades 1-6. Emphasizes grammar, parts of speech, and writing. Jingles help students remember definitions. Phonics: “Saxon” Phonics is used in K through 2nd grade. Science: Science: A Closer Look, published by Macmillan/McGraw-Hill is used in grades K-6. Units cover life, earth, and physical sciences in all levels. Explore and Quick Lab activities make all lessons hands on for all students. Reading: Scott Foresman reading is used in grades 1-4 along with a large variety of trade books in every classroom. Trade books and anthologies of classic literature are used in grades 5 and 6. Social Studies: “Adventures in Time and Place” series is used in 3rd through 6th, with “My World” and “People Together” for 1st and 2nd respectively. In addition, classrooms have special events that correspond to their particular grade level studies. For instance the 6th grade class trip to study Texas government, 2nd grade president's presentations, and 3rd grade Medieval Times trip and unit.
